Cari amici,
oggi rilanciamo la petizione contro l'ampliamento della base militare americana a Vicenza. Firmate numerosi!

Gentile Presidente Obama,
ci rivolgiamo a Lei perche' siamo convinti che LEI  sia il solo a poter fare un regalo alla PACE, mettendo fine a una inutile vicenda di spese militari e sprechi.
A Vicenza, nel Nordest dell’Italia, da molti anni gli abitanti si oppongono all’insensato allargamento della base militare americana Ederle – Dal Molin, fino alla periferia della citta'.
Questo progetto che e' stato siglato tra il governo italiano e il Suo predecessore, George W. Bush, e' un monumento alla paranoia militarista dei tempi in cui il nemico era il blocco sovietico. Da allora molto e' cambiato, il pericolo per la sicurezza degli Stati Uniti e' considerato da tutti altrove. Per noi, in particolare, si trova nella poverta' in cui vivono molte popolazioni, e' qui che si sviluppa il terrorismo. Terrorismo prodotto da colonialismo e razzismo, e dalle guerre combattute dagli europei per saccheggiare materie prime e depredare i territori fertili nel mondo.
La Sua elezione a Presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America ed il Suo programma di rientro delle truppe dai territori di guerra ci fanno sperare in un cambiamento positivo anche per la base militare di Vicenza.
Di piu': sarebbe rivoluzionario dismettere la base militare e destinare i fondi ottenuti, per finanziare scuole, ospedali, medicinali, cibo, acqua potabile nei paesi poveri o in guerra. Questo gesto avrebbe un impatto piu' forte della cattura di Bin Laden e garantirebbe maggiore sicurezza di qualsiasi base militare. Si tratterebbe di dire finalmente al MONDO che gli STATI UNITI preferiscono la CIVILTA’ alle ARMI, la TUTELA DELL’AMBIENTE ALLE DEVASTAZIONI, LA SOLIDARIETA’ AL DENARO, L’ECONOMIA DI PACE A QUELLA DI GUERRA. 
SAPPIAMO CHE LEI LO PUO’ FARE, PRESIDENTE OBAMA.

Dear President Obama,
we write directly to you because we are convinced that you are the only one that can make this gift to peace, putting an end to a lengthy and useless story of military spending. The citizens of Vicenza, in the North-East of Italy, have been opposing the meaningless expansion of the US military base Ederle - Dal Molin for many years. This project was agreed upon by the Italian Government and your predecessor Gorge W. Bush and is a monument to the military paranoia of the cold war. Many things have changed since then and many agree that the threats to US security are now elsewhere. We believe that new threats lie in the poverty of many nations: it is here that terrorism develops – terrorism that has its roots in racism and colonialism, in the wars that the Europeans fought to prey on raw materials and fertile ground around the world. Your election as President of the United States of America and your programme to return troops from war territories gives us hope also for the military base in Vicenza. We dare say more: it would be revolutionary to dismantle the base and use the money that would thus be saved to finance schools, hospitals, medicine distribution, food, clean water projects in developing countries and in war zones. It would be a means to finally say that the US chooses PEACE instead of ARMS, the PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT instead of ECOLOGICAL DEVASTATION, SOLIDARITY instead of PROFIT, an ECONOMY OF PEACE instead of an ECONOMY OF WAR. You can make the world dream of peace again..
